Posture

Your posture is changing all the time.

Good posture is about more than how you look standing in a mirror. It is a live readout of how well your spine, muscles and nervous system are working together, and it changes the moment any one of the three falls out of balance.

What a healthy spine actually does

A healthy back has three natural curves: a gentle inward curve in the neck, an outward curve through the upper back, and a second inward curve in the low back. Together they absorb shock and keep your body balanced over your feet. Good posture depends on more than the spine itself. Your muscles hold the spine in position and move it through its full range of motion. Your joints allow it to bend, twist and absorb load without excess wear. When any one of these three, spine, muscles or joints, is out of balance, the others compensate, often without you noticing until pain or fatigue sets in.

Why it matters

What good posture protects, and what erodes it

The upsides of good posture

  • Keeps bones and joints in proper alignment
  • Reduces abnormal wearing of joint surfaces
  • Decreases stress on spinal ligaments
  • Helps prevent the spine from becoming fixed in abnormal positions
  • Uses muscles more efficiently, which helps prevent fatigue
  • Supports easier, fuller breathing
  • Supports balance and coordination

Everyday causes of poor posture

  • Stress
  • Weight gain
  • Pregnancy
  • Weak or tight postural muscles
  • High-heeled shoes
  • Decreased flexibility
  • A poor work setup
  • Unhealthy sitting and sleeping habits

How we actually measure it

Guessing at posture from the outside only goes so far. On your first visit, which runs 45 to 60 minutes, Dr. Weitz runs an Insight Millennium scan alongside reflex and flexibility testing, so what we are looking at is data about how your nervous system is functioning, gathered the same day you walk in.

See what your posture is actually doing, not guessing at it.
